Senior Housing Hunt

Downsizing with Dignity

Housing is about more than shelter. It defines self-image, opportunity and wellbeing. Finding and promoting alternative housing options for folks who are 55+ is what I do. Creating attractive homes that meet the full range of resident needs is my passion.

Hunting for the right living arrangement, one that you can afford and reflects your best self, needs to be done with extreme care. This new stage in our life, the Third Chapter, should be about creative use of our time and talents, without the burden of raising families or managing careers.

This site will connect you with tools and services to help you plan for the future and navigate your housing hunt to a living arrangement that will give you joy and dignity.

About Me

This Is My Story

As a young child I learned that race determined where my family could live and where we lived defined the educational opportunities that would be offered to me.

Growing up I watched hardworking people invest effort and love into making their homes places they felt were attractive. Even when modest, the homes were welcoming spaces you treated with respect. The importance and value of one's housing was indelibly etched in mind. Everyone deserved such a space, a refuge and this source of pride.

I have had a career as an urban planner, housing developer and community builder. I mastered government subsidy programs, bought and flipped foreclosures, managed apartment complexes and rooming houses. My objective always has been to offer housing that was safe and attractive, homes as affordable as possible, particularly to low wealth communities.

It takes creativity and flexibility to make housing work. I hope this site can be a gathering place for smart ideas. It may take a village to raise a child but we need the wisdom of the full tribe to show us how to live bountifully in the third chapter of our lives.

Third Chapter Preparation

Challenges in Planning

Downsizing

Right-sizing our space & possessions

Do we have too much space to care for? Does our housing no longer reflect who we are or want to be? How do we dispose of possessions accumulated over decades that family members do not want or use?

Sharing

Alternative living arrangements

When is the right time to consider assisted living facilities? Is housing sharing right for you? How about building a small house in your son's backyard ? How about moving to a college town where you can attend lectures and classes?

Financing

Achieving long term economic security

How can we prepare for the future? Do we have equity in our home or other assets like timeshares or art that can supplement pension, social security or 40lk income?
